how I cranked up the wow factor in my kitchen

Last week I shared the Kitchen Mood Board I created for my in-laws with you guys. There was a lot of Pinteresting going on, and while I intended to be totally focused on their project, I couldn't help but think about updates to our place. The curse of the designer. It's a heavy burden to bear.

One thing I noticed - and I truly don't know how I didn't see this before - like 80% of the kitchens I've ever pinned (completely unscientific and likely inaccurate estimate) had one thing in common: an oriental rug. I mean, look at this.

And then look at this. Boooooooooorrrriiiiinggggg.

This rug, for me, was like a friend's really irritating habit (a la Ted Mosby encyclo-pay-deah) or a terribly disturbing scary movie preview. Once I saw it, I couldn't un-see it. I had to fix this.

In my perfect dream world, I would stumble upon one of these beauties at a garage sale or thrift store for like $20, but that requires that I actually get up Saturday morning and go to said garage sales, which almost never happens. So I did the next best thing: Ebay.

And for the record, I did look on Craig's List first, but people were either selling super ugly rugs or companies were wanting $2,000 for nice ones. Neither of those worked for me.

I started out searching for vintage rugs, but then came across a shop selling new ones at great prices and fell in LOVE. It was seriously hard to choose just one, but I did. This was only around $120, including shipping.

This rug totally takes this room from ho-hum kitchen to ooooooooh! kitchen. Of course now I want to rip out the countertops and backsplash. Stupid rug.

Am I moderately concerned that I'm a messy cook and will stain this rug? Kind of, I guess. But it's so dark that I'm thinking it won't be a huge issue. And we're more of a "crumb house" than a "flying spaghetti sauce" house anyway.

The colors in this rug are perfect and totally pull together all of the other accent colors in the room. And if you're like "oh man! I totally want her kitchen" (which you're probably not, but just in case) here are handful of my favorite pieces in the room. You know, the stuff that isn't the vintage stuff that's one of a kind that you can't have because it's MINE. Muhahaha.

And because I really like you guys, here's 20% off your purchase if you buy a rug with the ecarpetgallery folks. Use promo code ECGFRIENDS20 at checkout. They didn't pay me to say that or anything, but I really like the rug and I really like you.

What do you guys think? Do any of you have rugs in your kitchen? Am I totally crazy? Will I ever fall out of love with the color persimmon (NOPE)?

  1. Awesome rug. Maybe you could paint a sq or two of the backsplash tiles to add just a pop of color without totally redoing it? I heard that works.

    1. I've heard that too. In a perfect world I would have white subway tile with dark grey grout. Not a bold color, but more clean, you know? What I've got now is non-offensive, but not my favorite.

  2. Thanks! Yes, it's a one of a kind. Shocking that I found it at such a great price. It's a neat company since they stock both vintage and new.

  3. I may have to try that. I have a rug that I bought in Morocco at a rug market that does not have a place. My daughter claimed it for awhile but it was exactly the opposite color palate of the rest of her room. Now it is in the middle of the playroom. Maybe it will go in my totally monochromatic kitchen that needs some color. I will snap a pic and send it to you on FB if I do it.
