i joined a quilt club (and you can too!)

My favorite fabric store City Craft kicked off their Modern Quilting Club last night. You're probably picturing me sitting in a drab room full of little old ladies hand stitching fabric with kittens on it, right? Well, you couldn't be more wrong. Quilting has resurged in a huge way (like cooking, sewing, knitting, and all of those other useful crafts). Modern Quilting is its own little (huge) movement. Our little club has young women, older women, tattooed women, a kid, and a couple of men. So there!

This month's meeting was a show and tell. I was really excited (and relieved) to see that I wasn't the only one with limited experience. I've made a few quilts, but my technique is, how you say, nonexistent. I'm looking forward to learning from these super talented folks.

I left feeling so inspired and ready to start quilting right away. And then I thought, you guys might want to take part in this too! So here's my thought. For those of you not fortunate enough to live in Dallas, let's take this Modern Quilting Club online!

Each month I'll share with you the technique and PDF instructions for what we are working on and you can:

  • Upload your photos to Simply Crafted's Facebook Page OR
  • Tag @simplycraftedblog and @citycraft on Instagram, OR
  • Email your photos to simplycraftedblog@gmail.com and I'll showcase them on the blog each month.
We can share with each other what we are working on, ask advice when we need it, and most importantly, be inspired to take the time to quilt.

City Craft is making it awesome by providing PDF instructions each month on their website, which I'll link you up to.

Don't think this has to be some big, overwhelming thing. You don't have to make an entire quilt a month. I mean, you can if you want. Or just work on piecing a few things together to get the technique. I think I'm going to do a square each month with the new technique, and then put all 12 squares together at the end for a sampler style quilt. It might be hideous, but more likely, it will be amazing.

Then, because I thought this would be equally awesome, I'm going to open up my Quilting Inspiration Pinterest Board as a group pin board, so we can pin quilts that we love along with what we've made.

Sounds fun, right? If you're in, or think you might want to be in, leave a comment below.

To get the gears turning, here are photos of some of the fabulous quilts we saw last night.

***UPDATE: PDF of study guides can be found at citycraftquiltclub.com. Our first assignment is half square triangles. Say that 5 times fast and you'll feel ridiculous. Submit your photos by June 16th! ***
