muu muu summer dress tutorial

muu muu dress tutorial

We have entered the season of birthday parties. Henry's party a couple of weeks ago ushered us in, and we have a birthday party for 2-3 year olds nearly every weekend from now until June. Pray for me. I'm kidding (kind of).

This past weekend was a particularly special birthday shindig. Henry's girlfriend, Adalyn, turned three. Just look at these lovebirds. They will absolutely get married one day. It's a fact.

Well, a girl as special as Adalyn deserved an extra special present. And since we've decided to shut down the baby factory over here, there will be no little girls in this house to make dresses for. What do do with my giant stash of fabric? Obviously make a dress (or two) for Ady.

This was my first attempt at sewing a dress totally from scratch. I've done a few old t-shirt + fabric skirt type dresses (more of that in a future post), but I was still a bit intimidated by the thought of taking this on. My first stop was, of course, the wonderful ladies over at Pretty Prudent.

The lovely Jacinda posted this fantastic tutorial with pattern that I used as a go by, with a few enhancements to make it my own.

I took a pretty blue/black/green/white vintage floral from my stash (I had 1.5 yards but didn't come close to using it all), a fat quarter impulse purchase from City Craft, and an old blue t-shirt-turned-ruffle-scarf that was sitting in my scrap pile. It was unfortunately a bit too short to actually be a scarf. I'd used this tutorial about 2.5 years ago to make it and couldn't bear the thought of getting rid of it since the color was this magical shade of blue.

Sidebar - that scarf from a t-shirt trick is a great way to use an old t-shirt that in my case I loved, but a stupid moth had put a hole in. I couldn't bear the thought of a J Crew t-shirt going in the garbage.

I used the fat quarter to create the sleeves. Perfect. Then I opened up the vintage fabric that I had my heart set on using only to discover it was totally see through. Yikes.

Thankfully I had some scrap muslin lying around, so I cut the muslin using the same pattern pieces to create a lining. The lining was a few inches shorter than the dress, but I was completely unwilling to waste a nap time by going to the store to buy more. The lining would be long enough to cover what it needed to cover (if ya know what I mean), so I called it a win. Ignore my totally lazy ironing job there. I would eventually fix it (she lies).

I followed Pretty Prudent's tutorial to a T. When I was done, I just stitched my blue "scarf" around the waistline of the dress, just below the arm holes. Turns out it was the exact right diameter for a 3 year old's waist (about 21").

So cute, right? All of the stars aligned and both boys napped at the same time for 2 hours, which was exactly enough time for me to make this dress.

Adalyn's reaction to the dress:

Don't worry. She isn't crying because she hates the dress. She's crying because her mom wouldn't let her wear it to the park. Being 3 is hard. Also, my clothes apparently make all small children cry. Disturbing trend, or hilarious coincidence?

Thanks again to the ladies at Pretty Prudent for another awesome tutorial.
